Topic of the week

Do you base your training sessions on how your team’s last match turned out? An interesting Twitter thread suggests this is a bad idea - click on the tweet to see all the comments:

One aspect of the C license (and many other courses I have been on), that I disagree with, is using weaknesses from matches to inform practice design.

My guess is you’re probably better off combining a) season-long, key priorities and b) specific interventions born out of match observations.

With our fairly new team this season, we had general areas we wanted to cover (gelling as a team, improving combination play and energy). Yet we also spotted recurring issues in games (defending corners, playing goal kicks), that we addressed with a couple of dedicated sessions each.

Questions of the week

So what’s the worst thing about grassroots coaching?

It seems like parents are the usual answer… which seems a pretty unfair generalisation! Whatever you do, there will always be some people you don’t quite see eye to eye with. (My answer? Kids whose family struggle to cope with paying fees, which is a real shame)

And what’s the best thing? Player happiness, followed by development - I couldn’t agree more!

I hope you enjoyed this. Have a great week!
